One of the most useful numbers for comparing omega chews is the combined EPA and DHA per chew. Depending on the product, that figure may appear in the guaranteed analysis or elsewhere on the label, and EPA and DHA are not among the nutrient values every label is required to declare. Two products can make near-identical claims on the front while the figures on the back tell different stories. This guide covers where those figures live on a label, how to run them against a dog’s body weight, and the point where the arithmetic stops being a shopping question and becomes a conversation with a vet.
What Sits Inside an Omega Chew
Omega chews are a delivery format. The chew itself is a soft, flavored base, and the working ingredient is oil, usually from anchovy, sardine, pollock, salmon, or cultivated marine algae. What that oil carries are two long-chain fatty acids: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
There is a third omega-3 that turns up on labels, and it behaves differently. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) comes from plants such as flaxseed and canola. It is a real omega-3 and it counts toward a total omega-3 figure, but it is not interchangeable with the marine pair, which is the single most useful thing to understand before comparing two tubs.
The Three Numbers on the Label, and Which One Counts
1. Total omega-3 fatty acids
This is the headline figure, and on its own it tells you almost nothing. In their review of omega-3 supplementation in dogs and cats, veterinary nutrition researchers Catherine Lenox and John Bauer point out that a product with a high total omega-3 concentration could be carrying mostly ALA, mostly EPA and DHA, or some blend of the three. The same authors note that products are sometimes advertised on their omega-3 content while the actual source in the tub is flaxseed or canola oil. A big total is not evidence of a big EPA and DHA figure.
2. EPA and DHA, listed separately
This is the pair to write down. Look for EPA and DHA reported separately, then convert the listed amount to a per-chew figure when necessary. A chew might read EPA 140 mg, DHA 125 mg; add them and that chew supplies 265 mg of combined EPA and DHA, which is the figure to carry into every comparison that follows. If a label gives a total omega-3 number and never separates EPA and DHA, you cannot reliably compare EPA+DHA potency.
3. The oil source
Marine sources supply EPA and DHA directly. Plant sources supply ALA, which the body has to convert, and that conversion is inefficient: Lenox and Bauer put it below 10% in humans and describe it as limited in dogs. A chew built on flaxseed can post a respectable omega-3 total while providing much less EPA and DHA than the headline number suggests.

Running the Numbers for a Dog’s Weight
Once you have EPA plus DHA per chew, multiply by the number of chews the serving chart lists for a dog’s weight. That gives you a daily figure, and a daily figure is the only thing that lets you hold one product against another. It is also the number to take to a vet.
How much any particular dog should get is a question for that vet. Published amounts vary with the reason for supplementing and are set for individual patients rather than read off a chart, so this article does not print a target on purpose.
What is worth knowing is the ceiling. The National Research Council sets a safe upper limit for combined EPA and DHA, reported by Lenox and Bauer as 2,800 mg per 1,000 kcal of diet. Converted to body weight, it looks like this.

These are ceilings, not targets. They rise with body weight, and they are one more reason that going above a label’s own serving size is a conversation with a vet rather than a decision made at the shelf.
The Calories Nobody Counts
Fat is the most calorie-dense nutrient there is, at roughly 9 kcal per gram, and the oil in a chew brings its calories along with its fatty acids. A single chew is small. Four chews a day for a large dog can add a meaningful number of calories over time, even though supplements are easy to overlook when counting daily food.
Those calories matter more for some dogs than others. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center notes that oil is high in calories, and that for a dog carrying extra weight, losing that weight often brings meaningful relief from joint pain on its own. Where weight is already a concern, that is worth raising with a vet before adding anything to the bowl.
The practical step is dull: find the kcal per chew on the label, multiply by the daily serving, and count that total as part of the day’s food, the same way any other treat gets counted. A calorie calculator gives you the daily budget to measure it against, and a weight tracker over a few weeks shows whether anything drifted. If the numbers need adjusting, a vet is the one to say how.
More Is Not Better
Lenox and Bauer describe loose stool and vomiting among the gastrointestinal effects reported with omega-3 supplementation, with adverse effects generally more likely at higher doses. A gradual introduction is one of the approaches the same review mentions, and many labels build one into their own instructions, so start there and raise anything persistent with a vet.
Two other cautions come out of that review. High doses may be worth pausing ahead of planned surgery, because some inflammation is part of how wounds heal. EPA and DHA can also affect blood clots, which means there is potential for interaction with medications that do the same, including aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs. Cornell’s guidance is blunter and worth repeating: it is possible to overdose on these products, so store them like medication rather than like snacks.
How to Compare Two Tubs
“High potency,” “extra strength,” and strength multipliers have no fixed definition, and none of them survive contact with the guaranteed analysis. Six things are worth checking instead.
- EPA and DHA broken out separately. Look for the amount per serving and convert it to a per-chew figure when necessary. Avoid comparing a per-serving number from one product with a per-chew number from another.
- A named oil source. Anchovy, sardine, pollock, salmon, algal. “Omega blend” is not a source.
- A serving chart by body weight. Serving guidance may vary with body weight, so compare products using the serving chart rather than the chew count alone.
- An antioxidant in the formula. Marine oils are unstable and prone to going rancid. Lenox and Bauer note that vitamin E slows that breakdown and extends freshness, and that it is worth checking a supplement for adequate antioxidants, calling the maker if the label is silent.
- The NASC seal. Cornell advises choosing a brand your vet recommends or one carrying the National Animal Supplement Council seal, since supplements are not regulated like medications and products may not contain what the label states.
- Cost per day, not per tub. Divide the price by the days the tub lasts at your dog’s serving size, not by the chew count.
Some makers publish more of this than others. When a listing for omega chews for dogs prints EPA and DHA separately, names the oils, and includes a serving chart by weight, it gives you most of what the arithmetic above needs before anything ships. A page that leads with a multiplier and never shows the milligrams tells you something too
When to Ask a Vet First
An omega chew is a supplement, not a diagnosis, and there are situations where the chew should wait until after the appointment.
- The dog is on aspirin, an anti-inflammatory medication, or anything else that affects clotting.
- Surgery is scheduled.
- The dog is overweight, or has a fat-restricted diet or a history of pancreatitis. Lenox and Bauer report no cases of fish oil supplements causing pancreatitis in dogs, but fat intake is still worth discussing where that history exists.
- The dog is diabetic, or on medication for a chronic condition.
- The itching, hair loss, or open sores prompting the purchase are new, spreading, or getting worse. Skin that is deteriorating needs an examination, not a supplement trial.
Final Thoughts
Omega chews are one of the few supplement categories where the label gives you enough to judge the product yourself, provided you look at the right line. Total omega-3 is a claim. EPA and DHA are a measurement.
Photograph the guaranteed analysis and any separate EPA/DHA information before you buy, work out the daily EPA and DHA for the dog in front of you, count the calories it adds, and take that figure to your vet along with the reason you are considering it. That is a short conversation, and cheaper than a shelf of tubs nobody ever compared.
